Dates for planting family onions in open ground

Growing this plant in the open field has some features. This culture is not afraid of frost and is planted in March-April.... The greens are ready to be harvested in May, and the head of the bulb will ripen a month later.

To get early greens, family onions must be planted in mid-October, then the plant has time to take root, but will not begin to grow. The culture will delight with the harvest of greenery in April.

Although the family onion is considered a frost-hardy plant, but for the winter it is recommended to plant it in the southern territories... In the middle lane and in the Urals, during severe frosts, about half of the planted onions is lost.

Soil preparation

In order to grow a good harvest, you need to choose the right site and prepare the soil. The culture germinates well in sunlit areas. The plant thrives in fertile, moderately moist soils, which must be prepared in advance before boarding.

If the planting is carried out in the spring, then the soil is prepared in the fall.: the soil is cleared of weeds, and then dug up to a depth of 20-25 cm.

For each square meter, make:

  • 5 kg of humus or compost;
  • 1 tsp superphosphate;
  • 1 tsp urea;
  • 2-3 st. tablespoons of wood ash.

Before planting in spring for each square meter add 25 g of nitrogen fertilizer... If the planting of the plant will be carried out in the fall, then the soil is prepared in the summer.

Rules, scheme and features of planting in spring

To protect the plant from diseases, before planting the seed, it is recommended to soak it for half an hour in a solution of a fungicidal preparation or in a solution of potassium permanganate.

For planting, take small onions, approximately 3 cm in diameter. About 30 pieces are planted per square meter, at a distance of approximately 10 cm from each other. Onions are planted in moist soil, deepening by 10 cm.

When planting in spring, in order to increase yields and prevent shooting, it is recommended to cover the crops with lutrasil, which is removed after the first descents. Moreover, it is necessary to mulch the soil using humus or peat.

If planting is carried out before winter, then planting is carried out according to the same scheme, and mulching is carried out with peat.

Proper care of shallots

Caring for a plant grown in open ground is not at all difficult and consists of the following:

  1. Watering.
  2. Loosening.
  3. Weeding the garden.
  4. Top dressing.

At the beginning of growth, family onions should be watered periodically, because if the plant does not have enough moisture, it will quickly complete the growing season and the bulbs will not be able to fill up enough. Stop watering about a month before harvest... A layer of mulch will help trap moisture. For the whole season, watering is carried out at least 3 times.

The soil in the garden should not dry out.

In rainy weather water the plant less often, and in dry weather watering should be more frequent. In cloudy weather and no rain, the plant should be watered approximately once a week.

It is recommended to loosen the soil 1-2 times a week. It is necessary to constantly remove weeds to prevent the onion from becoming infected with incurable infections.

For larger harvests, it is recommended to thin out family onions in early July. During this period, you should not fertilize and water the garden. Indeed, instead of increasing its volume, the onion will continue to release greens.

When the arrows appear, it is recommended to cut them off.

Family onions tolerate feeding very well. What feeding to feed the plant:

  1. Bird droppings. The latter is diluted with water at the rate of 1:15.
  2. Complex mineral fertilizers: Dissolve 40 g in 10 l of water.
  3. Infusion of mullein. It is diluted in water in a ratio of 1:10.

It is necessary to stop fertilizing and stop feeding about a month before harvest so that the culture grows bulbs and does not continue to produce greens.

Family onions, in comparison with turnips, are distinguished by their refined taste and quick preparation. After its use, there is practically no smell from the mouth. For these reasons, the plant has become a real boon for gourmets. And the cultivation of this culture is an absolutely uncomplicated task and is within the power of novice gardeners.

The underground part of the plant forms nests in which the bulbs grow and develop.

Each nest can have from 5 to 30 onion fruits, for which the vegetable received its second name - a family.

  1. The weight of each root vegetable in the family reaches 30 to 45 grams. With frequent feeding and watering, vegetable growers grow larger onions, reaching a weight of 60-70 grams.
  2. The aerial part of the plant is characterized by juicy, green feathers with a pleasant taste and aroma.
  3. Green feathers are hollow inside; when ripe, they are covered with a thin layer of waxy coating.
  4. Root crops by the time of ripening are stretched and overgrown with a protective peel, the color of which depends on the varietal variety of vegetables.
  5. The timely harvested crop is suitable for long-term storage and long-distance transportation.
  6. The vegetable culture is unpretentious in care, easily tolerates sudden temperature changes and is distinguished by strong natural immunity to diseases and harmful insects.

This method is applicable for growing outdoors during spring or autumn. If you want to grow a green feather, you need to plant it in the summer. In order to get a harvest of ready-to-eat onions after the very first planting, choose the best varieties for yourself and buy immediately a set, which can be found almost everywhere in the Moscow region! Correct fit:

  • when buying material for planting, make sure that it is of high quality, there is no spoilage or rot, the tubers must be firm and perfectly dried
  • the seedlings are usually the same size - this is the guarantee that the seedlings will be almost simultaneous
  • the material must first be warmed up (in the sun or near the stove, batteries)
  • beforehand (at night) before planting, it is important to soak the seedlings in fertilizer
  • just before planting, soak the onion in a solution of copper sulfate so that it does not get sick with any fungi
  • if you like and want to grow a green feather, you should cut off the tops of the sevka slightly
  • the beds must first be "thought out" and prepared
  • plant the onion in the ground to a depth of no more than 4–5 cm, and water it well immediately after planting. Caring for him is quite simple.

Nevertheless, in the summer, onions need to be looked after especially. The main thing in the growing process is to monitor the beds and prevent the death of the plant, tasty feather and future tasty harvest.

Family onion varieties

To select a variety, one proceeds from the region of growing vegetables. What grows well in the middle lane does not suit the climate of Siberia. The description of the variety also plays an important role, you need to know what the family onion looks like in the photo:

  1. Distributed in the northern regions of the European part of the Old Believer bow. The variety has a pungent taste. Velikoustyugsky produces large bulbs, 6-10 bulbs in each nest.
  2. Albik onion ripens early even in Siberia. This variety has round-flat bulbs covered with yellow husks. The mass of the head is up to fifty grams. The plant is prized for its abundant return of green feathers.
  3. Yields a crop with a mass of greenery in two hundred grams Grant variety. In the nest there are up to 10–12 heads with yellow scales, juicy pulp with a sharp taste.
  4. A variety of onions of the shallot family has varieties with a delicate sweetish taste according to the description and photo. Among them is Pesandor with purple flesh. The vegetable produces a rich crop of twenty heads in a nest.
  5. For Siberia and the middle lane, varieties have been bred, among which there are Grasshopper, Sprint, Krepysh, Siberian yellow.
  6. In the southern regions, family varieties are cultivated - Russian violet, Rostov, Kuban yellow.

A family is selected taking into account the taste of the bulbs, the timing of the ripening of the vegetable. Among those giving large heads is the Kvochka variety. It is worth paying attention to it in order to get multi-colored fruits suitable for salads and for cooking.

When it rises

When growing seedlings in the open field during spring planting, seedlings appear above the soil surface for 9-11 days... If the planting work was carried out in October, then the first greenery breaks through, depending on weather conditions, more often this occurs in early-mid April.

Greenhouse cultivation also guarantees different periods of emergence of seedlings, which is due to the variety of construction and the thermal conductivity of its surfaces. In the most ordinary polycarbonate greenhouse, you can see the greenery making its way from the ground in late February and early March.

When using the bridge method of growing seedlings, you can get the first shoots 5-6 days after disembarkation.

Allium outdoor care

It is not difficult to take care of a decorative bow, it is enough to know the key features and basic needs of allium.
Ornamental onions are a fairly drought-resistant plant that can tolerate short periods of drought without consequences. Stagnation and excess moisture is much more destructive for bulbous than its deficiency. Excessive moisture causes bulb rot and death of the entire plant. Regular moderate watering is especially important during the active growing season of the plant, when the leaf mass and flower stalks are formed. Watering is carried out as needed. In a dry period - more often, in a rainy period - after the soil dries out. Weeding, loosening and mulching of the soil will also be a mandatory agrotechnical measure for caring for the plant.
Complex mineral and organic fertilizers (compost, wood ash, manure, bone meal) are used as top dressing. Top dressing must be applied at certain periods of plant development to help the crop cope with stress and stimulate further onion growth and development.
In the spring, in the phase of active leaf growth, bud setting and bulb formation, nitrogen-containing complexes in nitrate form are ideal, stimulating the above processes.
In the summer, it is rational to carry out liquid feeding with a full solution of mineral fertilizers. At the beginning of autumn, for top dressing, you need to use dry phosphorus-potassium fertilizers, preparing the plant for the winter period.
For the winter, it is better to mulch the site with humus or peat.

Family bow storage

I take the dried onions home, along with the whole harvest.

This is how onions are stored for food. I keep onions for planting, of different fractions, in separate boxes.

In the kitchen, the temperature is sometimes quite high, but the onions keep well. The storage temperature of the onion for planting is +19 +22 degrees, otherwise the bow will go to the arrow.

The family bow is well kept. In many ways, it is better than a simple onion. You just need to want to grow it.
