Breadfruit Seed Propagation: Learn About Growing Breadfruit From Seed

Breadfruit is a handsome, fast-growing tropical tree that can produce more than 200 cantaloupe-sized fruits in a single season. The starchy, fragrant fruit tastes something like bread, but it’s rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and high-quality protein. It’s not surprising that breadfruit is an important source of nutrition in many parts of the world.

Breadfruit is usually propagated by taking root cuttings or shoots, which produce a tree identical to the parent plant. Other common methods include layering, in-vitro propagation, or grafting. Once established, breadfruit trees require very little care. If you’re ambitious, you can definitely try growing breadfruit from seed, but keep in mind the fruit won’t develop true to type. How to Grow Breadfruit from Seed

Remove seeds from healthy, ripe breadfruit. Plant the seeds soon because they lose viability quickly and can’t be stored. Rinse the breadfruit seeds in a strainer to remove the pulp, then treat them with fungicide or soak them in a weak (2 percent) bleach solution for five to 10 minutes.

Fill a seed tray with loose, well-draining potting mix. Plant the seeds shallow to a depth of no more than twice the width of the seed. Water as needed to keep the potting mix lightly moist but never saturated. The mix should never be allowed to dry out.

Plant each seedling into an individual pot shortly after germination, which generally takes 10 to 14 days. You’ll want to continue its care in this container for at least a year, at which time you can plant the young breadfruit trees outdoors in light, well-drained soil. Look for a planting location in partial shade.

Add a handful of balanced, all-purpose fertilizer to the bottom of the hole before planting. A thin layer of mulch will help keep the soil moist and cool.

How to Grow Marang (Artocarpus Odoratissimus)

Also known as Johey oak, Madang, terap or breadfruit cousin, marang (Artocarpus odoratissimus) is a tropical fruit tree native to Asia.The marang is closely related to the jackfruit and breadfruit trees and bears large, 12-inch oblong fruit. These fruit are highly nutritious with a sweet scent and good flavor. In the wild, this tree may grow more than 40 feet tall, but in subtropical climates, it usually remains under 20 feet. For those not in U. S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 9 through 13, marang is best grown in a greenhouse. Marang trees grow quickly and will produce fruit after four to six years.

Fill a container with garden soil. Add equal amounts of organic compost and sand to form the rich sandy loam the marang tree prefers.

Harvest the seeds from a healthy, ripe marang fruit by cutting the spiny rind away from the white flesh to access the seeds. Wash the seeds thoroughly to remove any residue.

Plant the seed immediately. Although marang fruit seeds have an excellent propagation rate, they do not remain viable outside the fruit for long. Place the seed in a hole roughly twice the length of the seed, about 1 inch deep and cover with soil.

Water thoroughly to fully moisten the soil and collapse any air pockets. Keep your marang seed’s soil moist but not soggy.

Transplant your marang seedling into a larger container as soon as the first leaves mature -- approximately a month after the seedling first appears. Continue watering the seedling regularly to maintain a moist but not wet soil. Place the seedling where it will receive full sun.

Mist your marang seedling once or twice a week to add moisture to the air. As a tropical tree, marang fruit trees thrive in high humidity.

Move your marang tree to its final location after one year. In USDA hardiness zones 9 through 13, the marang will grow outdoors in full sun, but in zone 9, you will need to protect the tree from frosts. In all other growing zones, place your marang tree in a protective structure such as a greenhouse.

Fertilize your marang tree with 7 to 14 ounces of ammonium sulfate after planting and 2 pounds of fertilizer per tree twice a year after that.
