Greenhouse on the loggia - do it yourself

Recently I walked into my favorite flower shop and gasped. Usually there was such a rich assortment of different potted crops! And, mind you, not grown in some Holland, but here, in our native Leningrad region. Now there were only cut flowers, which can be called alive with a stretch, for me, they, like Hollywood stars, "give away with chemistry." weather, due to which all the goods were killed.

A woman followed me and was also dumbfounded. She cried that she was coming from the church, where she put a candle "for the repose" of her collection of geraniums and prayed that at least one of her indoor flowers would survive until spring. Yes, I have never encountered such a form of taking care of pets! We must take it into service. When I boasted that my plants, although they have a watery pale green appearance, are not going to die, moreover, grapes and oleander blossomed right after the New Year, everyone present in the store looked at me with disbelief, thank you, they did not say, they say it's good to lie. I had to tell what is so special I do with my flowers, that I manage to keep them in their normal form even in this unusually warm and gloomy winter.

I think it is worth revealing your secret to readers, especially since somewhere in the fall in the regional newspaper "Vesti" there was just an article on this topic, with which I do not fundamentally disagree, just there were such banal truths that everyone the student knows, but if you follow them, you cannot create a "garden city" in our climate.

And I have always dreamed of a greenhouse. Who will build it for me ?! Therefore, armed with tools, I decided to make a greenhouse on a loggia in a city apartment myself. First, I installed ordinary wooden frames with one glass (in the summer I take them off altogether), then I installed a single-chamber whole huge double-glazed window in the room and a narrow door to it, which is always open, except for frosty days with temperatures below 20 degrees, then the flowers fall on some time to enter the apartment. Under the glass unit I have two windowsills on both sides.

The walls and ceiling of the loggia were insulated with sheets of polystyrene, on top of fiberboard, which was covered with a primer and painted. On the floor are two sheets of styrofoam 5 cm thick each, then a sheet of plywood (12 mm), and on top - linoleum. I glued all this on "liquid nails". I made the wiring and hung up two "daylight" lamps. In winter, my greenhouse is cool and humid (temperature is about + 5 ° C), in spring, when I have to grow seedlings for a summer residence, it is warm (I turn on the stove) and light. At this time, the flowers are already doing well on the windowsill, the day has increased and the batteries are not so hot, some of the plants go to the rooms, and some go to the village.

How to provide the necessary light, warmth and humidity for indoor plants in a city apartment

Well, what about those who do not have a loggia or the desire to insulate it? In addition, I am well aware that indoor flowers are used to decorate the interior, they are hung on walls, placed on decorative stands, etc. Some of the flowers winter in my kitchen too, and nothing - they are safe and sound. The problem is that in winter in our houses, firstly, it is dark, secondly, hot (for flowers), and thirdly, dry. How to deal with this?

1. Lack of light is caused not only by short winter days, but also by our rotten climate in St. Petersburg, because of which low cloudiness literally hangs on the antennas, and we do not see the sun from October to March. The warm weather of this winter has just made the days so dark and hopeless. And also sealing buildings, huge poplars under the windows ... What kind of photosynthesis is there! A kind person, of course, will make his plants a highlight. What about electricity bills? Mercy, now there is such a choice of energy-saving lamps and lamps that you can do everything cheaply and beautifully.

Do not turn on the "overhead" light, turn on the side one, just above the flowers - and they feel good, and it doesn't hit you in the eyes. In general, I threw away all the "Ilyich's bulbs" and switched to energy-saving ones: although they are expensive, they last much longer, only you need to take European ones, not Chinese ones. So, in the kitchen I have 4 spiral bulbs of 20 W in my chandelier, most of my life passes there, the light is on constantly, as a result, this winter the flowers turned away from the window, and all the leaves look at the chandelier.

2. I understand that not everyone's apartments are warm, for example, it is cold in my block house, but this year they drowned from the heart, as if it was 40-degree frost outside, but even if the room, as usual, is + 15 ° C, then for plants it is still a lot. (That is why I put single frames on the loggia.) In the warmth, the plants continue to grow, and with a lack of light, they stretch out and die. Of course, no one will cool the house for the sake of the comfort of the plants, but you can redirect the heat from the batteries. There are special grilles for batteries, but you still need to look for them.

I make it easier: I take a roll of foil, better than construction foil - it is stronger, along the edge so that it does not tear, I glue the adhesive tape, I attach the other edge to the window sill, the ends of the foil to the frame. Better yet, take a substrate for baths - foil isolon, it does not break when you water the flowers, it can be used for more than one year, it does not let heat through. Thus, the heat from the radiator goes into the room, and not to the window, it is cold from the glass, but in severe frosts you need to make sure that the flowers do not freeze. It is necessary to water rarely, otherwise they will rot. The foil also prevents light from scattering, and the plants do not stretch as well.

3. Dry air in our apartments in winter is a big trouble not only for plants and wooden furniture, but also for ourselves: hence allergies, acute respiratory infections and other diseases. After all, many plant indoor plants precisely in order to humidify the air. Trivial spraying, of course, the more often it is done, the better. It gives its positive results, but rather in the sense that the dust is washed off the leaves, improving photosynthesis. My advice: buy a humidifier; it is possible without any "bells and whistles", in the form of an ionizer or a salt lamp. This is a beautiful and useful device, you will feel it right away. And how sweet to sleep under it, as on the seashore, even the snoring disappears. And the flowers will be grateful to you, the leaves will stop drying. This pleasure costs about 1,500 rubles.

I want to get a few more tricks out of my piggy bank. I have a lot of flowers, but most of them only winter in a city apartment, and in the summer they go to the country house to look beautiful in flower beds and flowerpots. I mean my collection of geraniums and balsams of different types, shapes and colors. Some plants I cut, and some I dig up entirely in the fall. "Adult" plants overwinter better, but take up more space. I plant the rooted cuttings in pots, which I keep outside all summer and take them to the city with the first frosts. Rather, I plant them in long balcony boxes. This saves space, moreover, the plants hibernate better in the company, although they stretch more strongly in the spring. One drawer that takes up half of the window sill looks better than a bunch of different-sized bowls, and it's more convenient to water.

One problem: inexpensive and beautiful domestic boxes are sold without pallets. Obviously only in our country it is customary, watering flowers, to pour water on the heads of passers-by. I get out of the situation like this. I pierce holes in the protruding cones at the bottom of the box, cover them with cups that remain from the "greens in cups", and fill everything with expanded clay drainage, then sand and soil. I water it often, but in moderation, the water does not flow out, and the roots do not rot.

The second group of plants: fuchsias, figs, laurel, begonias, ferns, I also take out to the country in the summer, but they remain in their pots. The first time I keep it on the veranda or in the greenhouse, then I put it in the garden. It should be borne in mind that indoor plants are sissies, if they are immediately kicked out into the street, they will not survive stress. We must gradually accustom them, not to expose them in windy weather, not to leave them outside at night - our nights are cold even in summer; they do not like direct sunlight, it is better to put it under trees. Such "summer residents" will survive any winter later.

There is one "but": most indoor plants, even the most exotic ones, are happily devoured by our pests, moreover, these pests with flowers can be brought to an apartment, where they will eat everything during the winter, and somehow it is not possible to spray chemicals with tightly closed windows very helpful! We'll have to chase pests every day even in the garden, especially since I don't want them to make holes in beautiful leaves. For each pest now has its own poison, I most often use "Iskra", but I certainly drop a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid into the spray container, best of all, "Fairy" of Finnish production. This is not a joke - I, for example, could not get rid of the scabbard and spider mite for a long time, and then one Georgian woman suggested this method to me, I tried it, everything worked out, for several years now I have remembered her with a kind word.

Spring shower for indoor plants

The third group of my plants has a permanent residence permit in the apartment. These are weaving and ampelous. Every spring, after washing the windows, I take off all the whips, even though this is a very laborious task, and drag the plants into the bath, where I wash them well, then, if necessary, rejuvenate them, transfer them to other pots, feed them, change the land. When determining in place, I try to arrange each lash in the same way as it grew before. Lianas, mostly shade-tolerant plants, but do not like reorientation in space, shed their leaves. Contrary to popular belief that indoor flowers should be constantly turned sideways to the light, in winter I never do this and do not advise you.

Imagine how much energy an already weakened plant will spend on such frills. Make you dance lambada every day in December, you will immediately start talking about depression. Does any of you do exercises in the morning? That's the same.

How to water and what to feed indoor plants

Everybody knows that it is impossible to pour and dry the plants, which should be watered with warm, settled water... Ideally, this is so, but it takes me more than 10 liters for watering at a time. Where is such a mass of water to be kept? Therefore, I water the plants from the tap, except for the most valuable and capricious ones. Do not throw away used tea leaves, drunk tea is good for watering, saves flowers from diseases, and tea leaves can be dried and then mulched the ground with them.

Do not plant flowers in hanging pots with saucers attached to the bottom, use them only in the form of pots. After all, it is usually impossible to water such a pot without arranging a flood, the earth dries up quickly, the flower dies. In winter, ampelous plants should not be hung high. It is even darker and hotter under the ceiling than on the windowsill by the radiator.

For large plants, for example grapes, I use "long-playing" fertilizers such as AVA, all the rest I feed once every two weeks, alternating mineral fertilizers with humic ones. In the first case I prefer fertilizers "Kemir" and "Agricola", in the second - "Ideal". In addition, in December-January I water the geraniums with the "Emerald" preparation so that the leaves do not turn yellow. And in the summer, on the street, I spray all flowering plants with flowering stimulants - these drugs, in addition, contribute to root formation, and the stronger the root, the more beautiful the plant in winter.

Every person who enters my house is amazed at how many flowers there are and how well they all grow. It all started with the fact that one day, taking offense at my husband for something, I reproached him: "If only I gave a flower!" Since then, he has given me flowers for all the holidays, but in pots, but friends, believing that this is especially pleasant for me, are also not lagging behind. And then I wonder how I can place all this green economy in an apartment. Do not repeat my mistakes, let there be some flowers, but they will all be well-groomed.

In addition, due to the abundance of flowers and their prosperous existence, some sincerely consider me either a witch, or a doo in this matter. Well, not without that, I guess. And that's why I am often asked if there are such plants that in no case should be started in the house. Many are confused by wax ivy, there is a belief that it blooms to the deceased. I have ivy spread all over the window, so what? Although, however, once, when more than thirty flowers bloomed on it at once, I somehow did not fit into the doorway, the aroma turned out to be too heady. And yet it is just a beautiful tropical plant, nothing more. If you are allergic, then you need to be careful with flowering plants and not start different "exotics". However, the head may also ache from a bouquet of bird cherry, but bird cherry is a good plant. Grow geraniums, they bloom beautifully, and drive away evil spirits.

They also ask me if it is true that evil entities can settle in some plants, for example, in cacti. Evil entities, of course, can settle in your apartment, however, in the form of an evil mother-in-law or mother-in-law, and if you constantly scandalize, then negative energy will accumulate under the ceiling, then it will slowly sink down. If there are flowers on the way, first they will get sick and die, and then - guess who? In houses where advice and love reign, there are always many beautiful flowers. And in the offices of fraudulent companies, there are always some gnarled yuccas. Pay attention on occasion.

Once I heard that the Americans say about a man whose everything grows and smells like that he was born with "green hands." Thank God that in our country there are still the majority of "green-handed" people. Look in the evening at the windows of any St. Petersburg house; in a rare window you will not see flowers. And how happy in spring are tomato seedlings, even if planted in milk bags. You begin to believe that soon it will be warm, the sun will look out, depression will go away, and everything will be fine with us!

Light and warm

The location of the greenhouse on the south or north side of the house, the presence of air flow, the transparency of the glass and the strength of the materials from which the supporting structures are made - all these parameters determine the reliability of the room for plants. From hypothermia and waterlogging, the soil will protect the heated floor, and if you wish, you can even put a fireplace. It is good if the greenhouse is equipped with a ventilation system and awnings for shading plants on sunny days. Trees growing near the greenhouse will also save from air overheating. Internal curtains that roll up in the form of rolls or blinds will help to hide from bright sunlight. To prevent an excessive rise in temperature inside the greenhouse, make narrow gaps under the doors in summer, and install a fan under the roof. If possible, install automatic systems on the roof to open vents and street awnings.

Interesting ideas in the design of the balcony

A wardrobe on the balcony is a stylish decoration. Even if the balcony room has minimal dimensions, you can visually enlarge it with the help of mirrored doors. Creation of certain proportions in the design increases the space. If the balcony or loggia is of decent size, then you can make your dreams come true. Do not try to use only your knowledge in construction. You can use the services of a designer, or read the information on our website.

Consider the following tips when designing your cabinet:

  1. The presence of asymmetry in combination with straight shapes
  2. Use for decoration of extraordinary materials (fabric, ceramic tiles, use of drawings)
  3. Artificial violation of patterns and shapes
  4. The presence of contrasting combinations
  5. The use of backlighting.

Modern designers are trying to move away from existing patterns. Nobody bothers you to do the same and abandon the accepted norms. Add personality and charm to your creation.

With an unusual shape or non-standard color combination, you can emphasize the individuality of the cabinet you have made. Standard furniture has set the teeth on edge for any person. The author's design and excellent workmanship of the cabinet will surprise your friends and guests.

Craftsmen, publishing photographs, prove that the loggia can be turned into a separate room, which has its own design with plastic cabinets for the balcony. By turning the loggia into a small cozy room, you will not want to leave it. Provided some of the attributes, such as a heating cabinet, balcony cellar, will allow you to spend significant time on the balcony. Regardless of the size of your balcony or loggia, you can create a cozy corner that will be significantly different from the design of the rest of the apartment.

Arrangement of a winter garden on a balcony or loggia

The intense rhythm of modern life does not always allow us to find time to communicate with nature in the country, in the forest or in the park.

People are trying to make up for the lack of positive emotions in various ways, decorating their home with their favorite plants.

It is not at all necessary to arrange a greenhouse in an apartment, armed with a baggage of knowledge, on the balcony you can arrange a cozy winter garden - a blooming oasis of wildlife, a source of useful phytoncides.

Pros of arranging a winter garden in an apartment

The peculiarity of our climatic zone is life under the conditions of the changing seasons, when plants rest from flowering and fruiting. But for wildlife lovers, there is an alternative. In order not to cut down on the living space of a city apartment, it is easy to equip a flowering corner on the balcony, using small secrets of forming an individual interior.

There are many advantages of turning a balcony into a year-round winter garden, but the main benefits are as follows:

  • The embodiment of original ideas for creating a "green" corner will turn the apartment into a real oasis, created with your own hands
  • An exciting lesson in arranging a balcony will enrich with new information from the field of construction and gardening
  • The result of the creation of a garden blooming all year round in the apartment will be an improvement in the health of all its inhabitants.

Conditions necessary for creating a winter garden

Having started to implement the original idea with a winter garden, you will have to take care of the reconstruction of the balcony space for the convenience of placing the greenhouse. Before deploying a landscape workshop on the loggia, you should prepare the balcony for placing your favorite plants in the winter garden. It is necessary to check the balcony structures for strength, the floors must withstand the load in the form of massive pots with earth. If this is a loggia, the strength of the structures is guaranteed.

The need for glazing and insulation

The most modern solution to the problem of a winter garden on a loggia or balcony will be the choice of plastic structures of a two-chamber or three-chamber type for glazing a balcony or loggia. The list of works usually guarantees:

  • Reliable sealing of the room
  • Protection against moisture penetration from outside
  • Tight fit balcony doors.

As a result, the threat of drafts, which are especially destructive for thermophilic plants, will be eliminated. But the garden on the balcony will have to be insulated with additional heating for the winter. The future greenhouse can be equipped with a warm floor or electric heaters fixed to the ceiling. When using additional heaters, you need to choose moisture-resistant thermal insulation materials.

How to get the right lighting

A tropical oasis will delight with luscious greenery and beautiful flowers all year round, if its inhabitants receive a sufficient amount of sunlight. To create comfortable conditions and a competent selection of plant varieties, you will have to figure out which side the garden on the balcony will be oriented to, what kind of shading will be.

  1. On the north side, with uniform dispersion of sunlight, strong heating cannot be achieved. The room will need additional heating with special lamps. If it is not possible to purchase them, you should not choose tropical specimens that need a lot of light and heat.
  2. On the balcony on the east side, the green spaces will be ideal conditions until midday. But the afternoon sun on a summer day will be hot. To protect the landscape workshop from overheating, blinds come in handy. The air conditioner will monitor the maintenance of the temperature regime.
  3. If you arrange a garden on a balcony facing the west, you need to take into account that the plant family will feel best in the evening. But from the brightness of direct sunlight, the warmth of which remains even at night, green friends need to be shaded.
  4. The pets of the greenhouse, located on the south side, will be maximally warmed by the rays of the sun, but you should not forget about the danger of overheating. To protect against the greenhouse effect, it is necessary to provide shading using one of the available methods.

Guided by modern technologies, you can equip a split system to create optimal conditions and help with the maintenance of the winter garden. Experienced gardeners provide maintenance of a certain air humidity with boxes with automatic irrigation, and exotic lovers equip a balcony oasis with a decorative fountain.

How to place plants on a balcony or loggia

In order for the winter garden to please the eye with many colors, and the soul with a good mood, it is important to carefully approach the choice of green spaces. The easiest way is to bring a few pots you like from a flower shop, arrange them on balcony shelves or racks, on the floor. But it is much more interesting to independently arrange the free space of the loggia, pick up original plants, plunge into the development of your own design, which will be unique.

How to make a balcony of a city apartment a winter garden

When starting to populate the winter garden with plants, you need to know that tall specimens are installed directly on the floor. To accommodate small pots, you will have to equip the room with shelves.

  • For planting large cacti and trees, stock up on floor pots or large flowerpots, but there should be no more than three of them
  • Decorate a wide window sill with a long container, if the window sill is narrow, give preference to long hanging pots
  • Define various types of ampelous and climbing plantings in pots, placing them along the top line of the wall or hanging them from the ceiling.

Alternating tall evergreen trees with small pots of beautiful flowers will help to avoid monotony. Free areas of the walls can be decorated with garlands of vines or other creeping specimens, but all green pets should feel equally comfortable in an artificially created climatic zone.

What types of popular plants will decorate the garden on the balcony with a riot of greenery, surprise with a variety of shapes and stunning colors:

  • The center of the composition can be decorated with a ficus, but you will have to limit the growth of the roots of an unpretentious tree
  • From large specimens, choose a philodendron, an erect or climbing vine adapts well to the conditions of the apartment
  • For a winter garden in a loggia room, a rapidly growing tetrastigma flower is suitable, which does not require particularly difficult care
  • The choice of a climbing vine scindapsus will help create a favorable psychological environment, harmony in the family
  • The famous beauty monstera is able to ozonize the air space by absorbing harmful substances (formaldehyde).

Little secret. To create coziness on a small balcony, use miniature compositions from different types of plants, but with the same requirements for the habitat. Decorate the corners of the balcony room with prickly pear, crassula or aloe, these varieties of green spaces are detrimental to the fungus.

The choice of furniture and decor for the winter garden on the balcony

The creation of coziness in the balcony corner of wildlife should be given no less attention than the selection of its green inhabitants. In confined spaces, remember that the garden on the balcony should have a low weight load, which imposes some restrictions on the choice of furniture. Take advice.

  1. When choosing a material for finishing the floor and walls, pay attention to its strength, resistance to mechanical damage and moisture, ultraviolet light. Ceramic tiles (flooring) are the ideal choice.
  2. Interior items should be compact and lightweight, preference - wooden structures. The lightness of wicker furniture and rocking chairs will give the room a unique home comfort.
  3. If there is a place for a mini-garden in the winter garden, you will need a beautiful wardrobe or cabinet for storing inventory. It will be possible to place containers with seedlings, pots with edible herbs on it.

To decorate your garden interior, use a tabletop fountain, a mini-pond with a miniature tree, and other types of mini-ponds. Additional decor (birds, butterflies) is placed on the branches of large trees or between pots with low-growing plants.

If you have a small loggia, stop at the original way of glazing the winter garden. Choosing a panoramic option consisting of solid glass sheets will create the illusion of a glass wall. This will visually expand the space of the greenhouse, and turn its creator into the owner of a tropical oasis soaring in the sky.

Functional areas of the loggia

First of all, of course, you will need to re-equip the loggia from a non-residential area into a residential one, for which you will have to insulate the floor and walls, install good double-glazed windows and make repairs with the design that will provide you with the necessary background for relaxation. Then, when planning the device of a loggia, you need to conditionally divide its area into 3 functional zones:

  1. passage area
  2. rest zone
  3. greenhouse zone.

For the passage zone, a strip 40-60 cm wide is enough, which, of course, goes from the door and provides access to the windows, to the recreation area and to the plants.

The size of the recreation area is most dependent on the size of the loggia, in particular on its width. On a wide loggia, you can place a coffee table and a couple of armchairs or a couch, and even make some kind of built-in wardrobes, where it will be convenient to store everything you need to ensure relaxation on the loggia. If the loggia is not very large, then folding furniture can be used both as a table and as a seating position. In the compact version of the recreation area, sun loungers and hammocks are often used, which, moreover, are pleasantly associated with the country interior.

It is clear that the greenhouse area is the main area of the loggia. It can occupy both floor space and windowsill space. The walls of the loggia are also used for this, placing various shelves on them. Even the ceiling often becomes a green greenhouse zone when beams for flowers are hung to it or pendants with pots are simply attached to it. When planning a greenhouse, it is worth considering the fact that in the warm season it will be possible to install special hanging boxes for plants outside the loggia.

Do-it-yourself insulation of the loggia with penoplex

To make your stay on the loggia as comfortable as possible, it will not be enough to install plastic windows on it. Its floor, walls and ceiling also need insulation. Of the materials for the device of high quality thermal insulation, we can recommend penoplex, or expanded polystyrene.

To insulate the loggia with penoplex with your own hands, they are usually fastened on brick walls with the help of wooden rails nailed down with nails, and on concrete walls with dowels, the head of which is also made of plastic.

The joints between individual sheets are first carefully filled with polyurethane foam, and after stripping it, a fairly wide adhesive tape is glued on top of them.

If foamed polystyrene is used as a heater, then the assembly foam must be pre-checked for toluene content, and if it is in it, then such polystyrene foam cannot be bought - the foamed polystyrene dissolves from the influence of toluene.

Greenhouse on the loggia - do it yourself - garden and vegetable garden

Dacha → Greenhouse, greenhouse → Do-it-yourself greenhouse in the country

Every gardener dreams of creating a greenhouse with his own hands, since it allows you to grow tropical plants all year round. The greenhouse will allow you to enjoy the beauty and greenery of plants even in winter, so you need to approach its construction with all seriousness, selecting only high-quality materials and competently planning its organization.

In this article we will talk about how to create a greenhouse with your own hands in the country.

What you need to know to create a greenhouse with your own hands

  • Seals and sealants for the construction of a greenhouse must be selected carefully, since their quality depends on the preservation of heat for the plants.
  • The choice of frame structures for the greenhouse is also an important step. Timber frame structures have excellent insulation, but the timber needs to be cared for. If you choose plastic, then it is more convenient and practical, but your greenhouse will not be as cozy as with wooden structures. We recommend using wood in combination with aluminum - these frame structures are distinguished by their endurance and strength, and have excellent insulating properties. Aluminum profile windows save heat.
  • If your greenhouse has powerful structures, then the roof can be made of glass. But if you are thinking of a small greenhouse and lightweight structures, then use a large-cell honeycomb polycarbonate, consisting of two or three-layer transparent polymer. To avoid strong cooling of the floor in the greenhouse, the foundation should be tape at a depth of 80 cm and insulated with polystyrene plates. In the summer, your greenhouse must breathe, otherwise overheating of the plants can occur. Therefore, opening windows must have an area of at least 10% of the entire roof area.
  • The best location for a greenhouse is the south or north side of the house, and excellent air flow, durable materials, transparent glass will make it reliable for plants. To protect plants from overmoistening or hypothermia, make heated floors or put a fireplace. In the summer, an awning and a ventilation system will save the plants from the scorching sun. To prevent the air from overheating, plant trees near the greenhouse. Also, to create shade for plants during a hot period, you can make internal curtains or blinds. Make narrow slots under the doors, and install a fan under the roof so that the air temperature in the greenhouse does not rise excessively. Or you can install an automatic window opening system and street awnings.

What to grow in a greenhouse?

If the constant air temperature in your greenhouse is +18 degrees, then you can start growing tropical plants - bananas, heliconia, palm trees, hibiscus, etc. If the temperature fluctuates from +5 to +12 degrees, then Siberian cotton wool, calliandra, lochrome, passionflower will grow well. At lower above zero temperatures in the greenhouse, you can shelter olive trees, figs, and citrus fruits for the winter.

If the place for the greenhouse is chosen correctly, and its landscaping is competent, your favorite plants will delight you all year round.

Greenhouse on the loggia - do it yourself - garden and vegetable garden

... Do you remember how it all started.

When we started selling tropical seeds, we already had little experience with germinating them at home. This activity brings a lot of pleasure and joy, every day you have the opportunity to observe whether the sprouted seedlings have grown up, whether something new has sprung up, how the already strengthened plants feel.

It is very interesting to observe how the seedling develops, because plants are like children: you rejoice at each new leaf and flower, as a mother rejoices at the first steps of her baby, his first word.

Plants grew actively and felt great in our more than cool climate, in which a normal summer lasts only three months. In most areas of central Russia, in cold winters, frosts can reach 30, or even 40 degrees - far from tropical weather! And the day is short, and the sun is not enough. But above a warm battery, with backlight lamps, our windowsills were in no way inferior to a small greenhouse.

But very soon the day came when there was practically no free space on our windowsills. Probably every fan of indoor floriculture sooner or later faces this problem.

And then we thought, why don't we expand and start growing overseas beauty not only for ourselves, but also for others - and first of all, for our regular customers, of whom there are already a lot! But not everyone has the conditions, time, skill, and just patience to grow blooming beauty from a tiny overseas seed. Moreover, by that time, many customers of seeds had already overwhelmed us with questions, when will we start selling not only seeds, but also plants.

It is difficult to organize the supply of plants from Florida and other tropical regions (import rules have become stricter), and we decided - why are we worse than tropical gardeners? We have hands and a head, good experience, and conditions close to tropical - you can create, if you wish! This is how the idea of our construction was born ...

    - But after all, it is not always possible to arrange a greenhouse at home, even a small one, which means that first it was necessary to find some more or less suitable room for these purposes. How did you solve this issue?

We have been looking for a suitable room for a long time, although it did not matter to us whether it would have windows or not, since now we can pick up any lamps for artificial lighting. The first object that we chose was a garage, an ordinary garage, without windows and heating, of all the benefits of civilization, only electricity was present. We moved the plants there, hung up the lamps and put up a heater. But alas, our plants did not stay in this dwelling for long - as soon as the air temperature dropped to + 7C outside, in our garage greenhouse it dropped to + 18C, and this was chilly for our exotic children! I had to urgently pick them up from there.

And here we were lucky, we were offered another room, but what a! The former refrigerating chamber: solid thick walls, not a single gap, not a single window. We never dreamed of the best, because the design of the "refrigerator" will provide the best possible heat preservation.

When we entered this room for the first time, the room looked terrible: littered with rubbish, old rubbish, remnants of some building materials, which, by the way, were later very useful to us. We cleaned the room in a couple of days: we took out the garbage and unnecessary trash, swept it, washed it. Sheets of thick cardboard were laid on the floor, and the top was covered with an old rug, and - the room was transformed! The very next day we transported all the plants to a new location. And they thought. There were bare walls in front of us.

    - And what did you come up with? How did the transformation of bare walls into a greenhouse come about?

On the Internet (especially in English) there are many resources about growing cannabis in the basement - how to make light, and watering, and how to feed carbon dioxide. But since we are not interested in hemp, even in the form of a tropical plant, we decided to go our own way.

The plants had to be arranged somewhere, to arrange them as conveniently as possible. And we began to develop a plan for the construction of the shelving. Of course, we did not come up with anything particularly new, we decided to fix solid shelves on the walls. They carried out measurements and began work, since the lumber, although old, was already there - we got it for free, in addition to the premises. In a couple of days, the plan for building the shelving was ready.

It is advisable to have a good tool at hand, then the construction process will go quickly: an electric saw, a good hammer, an electric drill, preferably an electric screwdriver, and many, many nails and screws.

The shelves were made from everything more or less suitable that came to hand, one shelf was even made from a door sawn along the old door - it turned out cheap and cheerful!

The figure shows the support for the future rack, made according to the simplest scheme: two high strong racks, fastened together by transverse wooden bars, on which shelves will be installed in the future.

Of course, the external design is not particularly beautiful at first, but the reliability of our shelves is excellent. And we did the transformation later, so that it would be pleasant to be in our newly-made botanical garden!

The rack is fastened to the wall with long nails, there were good walls in our room, and the nails went into them without any problems. Well, if the walls do not allow the use of nails, then you can fix the racks using a puncher, dowels, plugs and screws.

After the supports were fixed to the wall, we put shelves on them, exactly corresponding to the measurements made earlier.

The wall on which we fixed the shelving was large enough and we fixed three supports on it, so that we ended up with six wide, comfortable shelves 130 cm long and 40 cm wide. You should not make the shelves wider, since not enough light will fall on the plants standing in the corners.
